What causes period insomnia?

Women are more likely than men to experience insomnia, and the likely cause is hormonal. Your monthly cycle consists of four distinct phases, and each phase brings about changes to your hormones that can directly affect your sleep. 

The four phases of your period are the menstrual phase, follicular phase, ovulation phase, and luteal phase.

You can fall asleep

Maybe you have a lot on your mind, or maybe nothing at all. No matter the reason, you simply cannot fall asleep during your period. Changes in your hormone levels can interfere with your body’s release of melatonin, which helps you fall asleep.

Hormones can change your body temperature, making it difficult for you to stay asleep. If you’ve ever woken up feeling hot or sweaty, it could be a result of hormonal changes that are making your body temperature rise. 

How to deal with period insomnia?

Eliminate Caffeine

Put your phone down

Why are people moody during their periods?

Why does it happen?

Experts aren’t sure about the exact cause of PMS, but it’s likely linked to hormonal fluctuations that happen during the second half of the menstrual cycle.

Ovulation happens about halfway through your cycle. During this time, your body releases an egg, causing estrogen and progesterone levels to drop. A shift in these hormones can lead to both physical and emotional symptoms.

  • Sleep. Not getting enough sleep can kill your mood if you’re weeks away from your period. Try to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep a night, especially in the week or two leading up to your period. 
  • Stress. Unmanaged stress can worsen mood swings. Use deep breathing exercises to calm both your mind and body, especially when you feel PMS symptoms coming on.

What does the colour of your period blood mean?

Everyone has a different experience in their very first period. It is a good idea, however, to be informed. We have created a list of the different kinds of blood colours that you may see during your first period.

Bright Red

At the start of your period, you can expect the blood to be bright red. This bright red colour also indicates that you do not have any leftover blood from your last cycle.

Dark Red

Sometimes, the colour of the period blood can also appear blackish due to the blood staying inside for an extended period of time, and it generally appears at the start of a girl’s period. At times black blood can also suggest a blockage inside a woman’s vagina. You should look out for other symptoms of vaginal blockage which are:

  • Discharge with an unpleasant odor
  • Fever
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Itching or swelling in or around the vagina

Brown

The brownish colour of your period blood is not a matter of concern and is associated with the beginning of the period as your uterus is shedding blood for the first time. The blood has had enough time to oxidize because of which it has changed shade from the usual red. 

Black

Black blood can look a little alarming, but it doesn’t always mean there’s anything wrong. This is usually just very old blood that has taken a long time to pass through your system, and therefore has oxidised to the degree that it has turned black – this can look similar to coffee grounds in appearance.

Pink

Pink menstrual blood may indicate low estrogen levels in the body sometimes if it’s the only colour you see over multiple cycles. Some causes of low estrogen levels can include being on hormonal birth control that doesn’t contain estrogen or perimenopause.

Orange

Orange blood at the start of your cycle can also be a sign of period blood mixed with cervical secretions similar to the case of pink blood.* However, bright orange coloured blood might indicate an infection, in which case it is advisable to see a doctor.

Grey
